Aircraft Hangar Flooring

Dayton International Airport Hangar Renovation

Industrial Flooring for Aviation Facilities

When a hangar at Dayton International Airport required a flooring upgrade ahead of the Dayton International Air Show, the timeline was non-negotiable. The 15,000-square-foot aircraft hangar would serve as a staging area for the Blue Angels, making appearance, durability, and project execution critical to the facility’s success.

The existing epoxy flooring system was more than 15 years old and had reached the end of its service life. To ensure the hangar was ready for one of the region’s most visible aviation events, the facility required complete flooring restoration and a more robust coating system capable of supporting aviation operations for years to come.

The Challenge

After more than a decade of service, the existing epoxy floor coating showed significant wear and deterioration. The aging system no longer reflected the professional image expected of a premier aviation facility preparing to host one of the nation’s most recognized flight demonstration teams.

Beyond aesthetics, the facility needed a flooring solution that could withstand the demands of aircraft traffic, maintenance activities, rolling equipment, and the increased attention that comes with hosting a major public aviation event.

Project Requirements

The new flooring system needed to:

Hardig's Approach

Hardig Industrial Services developed a comprehensive flooring restoration plan that addressed both the aging coating system and the facility’s aesthetic goals ahead of the air show.

Existing Coating Removal

The project began with the removal of the existing 15-year-old epoxy flooring system. Surface preparation was performed to create the proper substrate profile required for long-term adhesion and performance of the new coating system.

High-Build Industrial Flooring System

Once preparation was complete, Hardig installed a higher-build, more robust flooring system utilizing Florock materials. The upgraded system was designed to provide enhanced durability, improved wear resistance, and a longer service life compared to the original coating.

Custom Blue Urethane Walkways

To improve facility organization and visual appeal, custom blue urethane walkways were incorporated throughout the hangar. The walkways were carefully detailed with matching caulking to create clean transitions and a professional finished appearance.

Coordinated Metal Grate Restoration

As part of the renovation, the existing metal grates throughout the facility were sandblasted and recoated to match the new flooring system. This additional scope ensured a consistent, high-end appearance throughout the entire hangar.

The completed system measured approximately ten times the thickness of the original coating, permanently concealing all substrate damage beneath a seamless, monolithic surface.

The Results

The completed flooring renovation transformed the 15,000-square-foot hangar and successfully prepared the facility for one of the most important aviation events in the region.
